Building Underground

A Cuyamaca, California couple, Skip and Linda Miller are busy making plans to build their next home mostly underground and as much as possible, fireproof. The couple has owned their mountaintop property for 30 years and it has burned down twice in that time. The last fire in October destroyed more than 2,200 homes and forced the evacuation of 500,000 residents. The 59 year old Linda Miller described why she wants to stay put, “Where we’re living now in town, I can hear the people down below us all the time, and next to us. You can’t see them, but you can hear them,” she said. “So it would be a lot to give up.”
Why would they let these people build again if this area is so prone to fire?
