The Burger Joint

April 4th 2008 by Kelly in Charlottesville, New Development, Restaurant, Restaurant Opening, UVA

Orbit closed! Yesterday one of the Mellow Mushroom owners, Andrew Watson, and crew made the deal official to take over the space. I like the idea of making that location nice again. I didn’t like how you would walk into Orbit for just 10 minutes and smell horrible and breathe in all that smoke. I also didn’t like that everything was dark and black because it could be a really open and nice space. I think doing a Burger place is a great idea even though I’m not fond of “Joint,” in the new name. I think he should just name it after himself and call it Andrews, but it’s not really my decision.

The crew will reopen in a couple weeks without a huge makeover and then later make more changes to the look. The corner needs more places for UVA students and visitors to hangout outside in the summer and I think the Orbit location is the perfect place. I think people would enjoy sitting in the booths with the huge garage doors raised up and eating a burger with some friends. The burgers that they want to create are big and messy and will be made to fit your different burger cravings! Late night they seem to want some of the pool tables to stick around but also possibly more room to dance upstairs!

What’s your vote for a new name for the restaurant?

“The Joint” is a cool name. I bet they’ll try to play it up with a juke box. Get rid of the locals at Orbit and that place will turn around. That spot will bring the college crowd. I hope these new owners flip that bar upsidedown. I’d give it a second chance, especially if they keep the happy hour specials around.

I haven’t heard if they are going to do a juke box. I think more people from the university will like the bar if it changed the theme too.
