Gmail Filters a lot of spam

November 17th 2008 by Kelly in General, Technology

I started using gmail a few years ago and have been really impressed by the way that it is able to filter out so much spam. But, it seems like spammers are always trying new tactics to get through the filters and pester you with countless adds for medicines that you don’t take, trips you’ve won, fake bank verifications, and the list goes on, this weekend I found a fun scam baiters site though that tries to mess with the people that send this junk out to you.

I googled someone’s phone number this weekend(I’m bad at answering if I don’t know who’s calling) and a website called the 419 eater came up instead. I wasted so much time reading the letter archives that were composed on 419eater to different Nigerian scammers. They actually make you laugh out loud, the amount of time “Shiver Me Timbers” puts into getting the scammers to identify themselves. “Shiver Me Timbers” sets up websites to get these scammers to contact him wanting money, then he begins the process of building a relationship with the scammer. It’s very sad to think that people are scammed by some of these Nigerian people that contact you via email for money. I have gotten one of these scam emails before. The conversation titled Busted! was one of the better ones I thought, I couldn’t believe he got the scammer to send a wooden carving of his head!

Spam is annoying, I just switched over to a mac so that I can stop accidently downloading things I didn’t mean to onto my computer. Using a mac is confusing when you’re so used to the way a pc works. Which do you prefer mac or pc? I think I’m the only one that loves the new pc commercials with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld, I think they’re funny.

I love my mac. I considered myself a PC girl forever but after a few weeks of using a mac, I’ll never use a PC again. PC’s are so high-maintainence and hard to understand. Mac’s are so user-friendly. It actually took me a while because I was like “wait, this can’t be THAT easy”, yes.it.can. Use Mac.

I thought the commercials were kinda funny but they got really bad ratings for some reason.

PC all the way! I’ll give MACs points for their trend factor. Sure, they have some interesting applications (garage band, ichat, etc). But 1.) you’re paying for it (Macs & Apple software/hardware ain’t cheap), 2.) you’re stuck w/ Apple as a supplier of everything (except iPod accessories!), and 3.) there’s just more you can do w/ a PC (software, hardware upgrades, compatibility, etc).*

Regarding Microsoft’s commercials: Bill Gates isn’t as cool as Steve Jobs, and he needs to let it go. The ads aren’t good.

    *not an exhaustive list :-)

Interesting…I didn’t know anyone used a pc anymore.

I don’t worry about spam anymore. Gmail does such a great job I don’t even think about it. Way to go progress.

The new issues is Facebook spam. This is in two categories for me:
    1) Updates from people I don’t really care about but am friends with because I felt bad denying their request.
    2) The new facebook viruses people are getting.

#1 is my fault and nothing can be done about it (though, it may indicate that facebook is jumping the shark).

#2 is a big problem that facebook needs to address.

#2 is annoying and happening more and more, it was fun to post links to funny things, now everyone is afraid to click them.

    1. You may pay more for a Mac the day you get it, but it’s so much more reliable than PC’s. The last PC I had, fried after 2 years!!! I think i paid close to $2,000 so it wasn’t a cheap one either.

I’ve gotten 3 of the same posts onto my wall this week (which im assuming are viruses?

I agree with Daniel, Facebook should do something about it, but what do they do? Can you get rid of hackers?
