Downtown Library

by Kelly on January 6, 2009

I would probably be very impressed by the UVA libraries, but I already appreciate the downtown library.  I recently got a library card after finding a few of the books I had bought, on the bestsellers shelf at the library.  I don’t reread books that often, it’s not like my favorite movie that I rewatch (so I don’t feel the need to own every book I read.)  It was all going well until I left a library book at home in Atlanta over Thanksgiving break.

I didn’t want to have the book sent to me, because let’s face it, even with the post office’s discount on shipping books, I might as well have bought the book. I checked out their website to plan my next move.  Did you know that you can renew online?  Maybe they’ve been doing this for awhile, but since it’s a new thing for me, I think this idea is perfect.  I renewed it all the way until Christmas and returned it after my return visit to Atlanta for Christmas.  Am I the only one that still thinks the library is cool?  No, there isn’t a Starbucks inside like Barnes and Noble and Books a Million, but I’m pretty sure they’d let you bring in any cup of coffee from your favorite spot.

I have heard of these “libraries” before. Aren’t they kind of like a combination of Amazon.com and Netflix but you have to pick up the book and take it back yourself. And it’s free?

Thanks for this. I completely forgot about the library and have never been to the one Downtown (yes, it’s sad). I’m going to check it out now.

Libraries are WAY cool, and JMRL has some good ones (Downtown, Northside) relative to our population. Love the online renewal, too!
