Tomorrow night at City Hall you can have your say about the new restaurant proposal for a French Creole Restaurant in Belmont. Stop by City Hall between 5:30-10:00 during the planning meeting to hear about the plans for the new restaurant. Since rumors have a tendency to get started I’ll just pass along the info from the Hinton Residents Andrew Ewell, Hannah Pittard, Lucinda Ewell, and Ian Day of what they would like to see happen in the Hinton Space:
“In an effort to help make Belmont the best neighborhood it can possibly be, we want to address some of the concerns we’ve heard our neighbors voice—concerns we share as fellow residents—and we hope to clarify a few details about what we will and will not be doing with our property.
* The restaurant we plan to open—The Southern Crescent—will be a family-owned casual fine dining establishment serving French Creole cuisine. It will not be a music venue or nightclub.
* Our kitchen staff features chefs from notable area restaurants such as The Clifton Inn, Hamilton’s at First and West Main, Bohème, and elsewhere, and will offer modern takes on classic Creole, Dixie, and Lowcountry fare. It will not be a fast food restaurant, nightclub, or concert venue.
* In order to minimize community impact, The Southern Crescent will be a small restaurant, with a seating capacity of 49 seats.
* The structural changes to our property will be contained within the existing footprint of the residential house, and our intention in every aspect of this project is to maintain and restore the architectural integrity of our 1923 Belmont home.”
This was also included in the note from the group and is very reassuring: “Please contact me, Hannah Pittard, Ian Day, or Lucinda Ewell, at any time to discuss these or other concerns. (I can be reached by phone at 434.825.2622, or by email at williamewell@hotmail.com.) Or stop us in the street, at Belmont Park, walking our dogs, or anywhere else you might see us around town. We’re happy to sit down and talk. ”
I’m always excited at the possibility of a new restaurant but I also know that understandably there are concerns with the new development. What do you think about the possibility of a new restaurant in the space on Hinton?

I like it that the owners live in Belmont. In general, I like the idea of the new restaurant, although with Mas, The Local, and Bel Rio right down the street, parking is going to be a problem. I live in Belmont too, where many residents don’t have driveways, so it might be frustrating for people to come home in the evening and not be able to park because of all the restaurant-goers.
That’s really true, Patience. I guess you’re expected not to have a car. In Atlanta, where I grew up, it became a problem with an area called Virginia Highlands. People would come out to the restaurants but they would take up spaces in front of people’s homes. The police started imposing parking permits for the residents so that their parking wouldn’t be taken away. If you did park in front of someone’s house, then you automatically got towed. It seemed extreme, but the 1st time you get towed while at dinner you learn you can walk a little further to eat. The church parking lot would be a good overflow parking lot in Belmont, if the restaurants could work something out with them.
Kelly – parking at the church is a great idea. I live just around the corner from this new restaurant and parking is definitely and issue. There have been several Friday nights where I couldn’t park in front of my house. I would also be in favor of restricting parking along the streets in front of La Taza and the The Local. Both those restaurants have outside seating – which is great until a car pulls and parks 3 feet from your table. Creating more of a “pedestrian friendly” vibe in downtown Belmont would create a really neat atmosphere – as customers could move freely between establishments.
