Tomorrow it’s time to vote and if you do you’ll be rewarded with free stuff. Go by Starbucks or Ben & Jerry’s tomorrow and get a free tall cup of coffee or a free scoop of ice cream. All you have to do is tell the locations that you voted.
The Apple Festival at Rural Ridge Farm in North Garden was packed. I hope they start having more events at the farm and opening it up because it was a lot of fun. They ran out of Brunswick stew early in the day even though they made 3 huge pots of it. 2 vineyards set up a tasting in one of the greenhouse buildings and Foggy Ridge Cider was there to offer a tasting of their hard ciders. Foggy Ridge is about 3 hours away from Charlottesville and they also have a meadery. The tastings for all 3 locations was $5 per person. None of the vineyards that were showcased are open to the public, but they travel around to festivals to allow people to taste their wine and hard cider.
There were tastings of the apples that were on sale to purchase and cider was available by the gallon. Blue grass music was playing and the hayride took you on a tour of the orchard. Besides brunswick stew there were also hotdogs on sale and multiple vendors set up like the city market.
Saturday(November 1st) from 10am-5pm the 8th Annual Apple Festival will be held at the Rural Ridge Farm in North Garden(Southern Albermarle County). There will be plenty of apples to taste and buy, apple pie contest, apple butter making, craft sales, hayrides and brunswick stew will be made along with hotdogs and hamburgers.
If you went to the Albermarle County Fair, that’s the direction you are going to be headed, out by Dr. Ho’s pizza.
Halloween on the Lawn at UVA is always a popular way to spend the afternoon on Halloween trick or treating. The lawn will be packed with little kids in costumes along with some dancers, acapella groups and Tom Perriello will also be on the lawn. It is hard to find a parking spot starting all the way back at Mellow Mushroom and The Red Roof Inn, be prepared to walk if you are planning on making your way over to the lawn. The candy and events will be from 4-6 today.
UVA is playing Miami tomorrow, kickoff is at 12 at Scott Stadium. The trolley will not travel south of Emmet Street on Jefferson Park Avenue through UVa’s Central Grounds, including McCormick and Alderman roads. Instead, the westbound trolley will travel on Jefferson Park Avenue to Emmet Street, turn right onto University Avenue and return to its usual route at the Rotunda, eastbound. The detour will run from 2-4:30 on Saturday.

I was sad yesterday when I heard that Vinegar Hill was closing their doors. The Hook reported that Vinegar Hill was “closing for good.” Then today, The Daily Progress reported that it’s not closing for good, just getting a little update. After the film festival this weekend, Vinegar Hill will temporarily close their doors, then after some upgrades are made, they plan to reopen November 14th. They plan to be open in time for Thanksgiving, the biggest movie going day of the year! Even though the new owners are planning on updating the theater, they plan to keep the updates inline with the history of the theater. The theater will close tonight after playing Bill Maher’s, Religulous and reopen playing “Rachel Getting Married” on the 14th.
If you are still looking for a Halloween costume, check at the Pantops Halloween store. They are still fully stocked (every wig imaginable) and all the prepackaged costumes are 20%. The Halloween store at Barracks is pretty picked over as far as accessories go. The Pantops Halloween store is in the Food Lion shopping center, next to subway.
Since I work downtown I go by the Quick Gym several times a day, I’ve never seen anyone working out in there. I want someone to try it and tell me about it. I’m skeptical about a 4 minute workout. I get adds in the newspaper(yes I think I’m the last Cville resident that still gets the Daily Progress) about it and I’m curious, but I still haven’t gone in to check it out myself. Maybe it’s a rumor, but I heard if you can actually do the workout for the full 4 minutes then you get the session free, supposedly it’s that hard. Normally the Quick Gym in Charlottesville costs $60 per month or you can do pay per session. This seems lazy to me to only work out for 4 minutes. Are we really that busy?
The add that came in the newspaper also gave workout tips. It said that if you work out legs on the Quick Gym then you should recover for 24-48 hours, just like if you were lifting weights. It tries to dismiss the rumors surrounding the workout. One of these machines cost around $15,000. I wonder if it’s like the Nordic Trak. My parents had a Nordic Trak when I was growing up and the commercials always made it look so easy, but I assure you that it was not easy at all.

Sephora is open! I like Sephora, I can’t think of a non-chain where women buy makeup (Clinque, Maybelline, MAC…) so even though it’s a chain, it’s a fun place to get makeup. Sephora has a little of everything to make you prettier, smell nice, and your skin healthier, very unCharlottesville if you ask me. There is one side for girl products(and the whole middle of the store) but the men have one side of the store too, and it’s a big store. They have every cologne and perfume you can think of and an assortment of body washes, lotions, body butter, and scrubs. Then they have a ton of makeup and tools to fix you up.
Sephora is one of those stores that you can spend a lot of time in because there are so many things to look at and try. I was getting really annoyed yesterday when I went in to check it out because the employees wouldn’t just let me wander. Every time I walked to a new area to look at something another employee would pester me and try to sell me on the products. I would rather just look for myself, and if I need help I’ll definitely ask. If you ever watch infomercials at night, you will see some of the products at Sephora (bare minerals, Coloron Eye Envy, GoSmile Teeth Whiting), that’s why it’s fun to wander because you can check all these things out and read about them. Sephora has a lot of kits to show you how to apply makeup or use a particular makeup brush or tool.
CNN reported today that a California woman wrapped a chain and lock around herself to fight to stay in her home. The woman is facing the foreclosure process and she has received a letter that tonight the bank will come and reposes her house. The woman refinanced her home 2 years ago with an adjustable rate mortgage but has since been unable to make the payments. She wants people to fight with her to stay in their homes even during hard times since the house that she is living in is where she planned to retire. The foreclosure process is always sad, even for big businesses and people that have made their livelihood from flipping houses, but it’s particularly hard to hear about when it’s a family being forced out of a home where they planned to stay indefinitely.
